“H1N1 Vaccine Clinic and Community Well-Being Day!”

Saturday, January 30th, H.U.R.T. (Holistic Urgent Recovery Training) will hold an event as:“H1N1 Vaccine Clinic and Community Well-Being Day!”It’s all free of charge and start from 9 am, wrapping up at 12 pm. The host church is: City In The Desert Metro-Church (1040 E. Apache Blvd. Tempe, AZ. 85281).

HURT has been a successful launch last couple of years as first project of For Our City movement under Mayor Hallman (City of Tempe) and Chaplain Jon McHatton’s leadership.  We have done six times of facilitators training covering about twenty five faith organizations with ninety trainees.  Chief Jones (Tempe Fire) and Chief Cliff (Tempe Police) were recognized as Champions of Compassion at the city council meeting this month with their undying passion and efforts to serve the community as well as their enormous support for HURT.

On the other hand, HURT became a part of Maricopa county C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Teams, Citizen Corps), working together for the emergency preparedness of the community, representing faith based organizations.  HURT is also closely working together with CEN (Christian Emergency Network) to be one of the training courses for the readiness of churches in the community.

HURT is getting more attention from other cities with its excellent training materials and good reports on facilitating each individual and family’s first 72 hour emergency preparedness.   In the City of Maricopa, there was a breakfast meeting held with the mayor, city manager, Fire Dept personnel, and faith leaders last month.  Now the first HURT training will take place in that city on February 27.  It’s exciting!!  This Saturday’s H1N1 Vaccine Clinic and Community Well-Being Day is another fruit of HURT as it has been connected with Jhoana Molina-Villar, Community Relations/Hard to Reach Populations Coordinator at Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Now I think it’s time for HURT to shift its direction from a training course to community movement.  Of course, we must deepen the impact of HURT training on the community with further development of training opportunities and materials.  But also I have been sensing a desperate need of connectivity among leaders and organizations that work so faithfully to the common good of community with genuine love for people.  Mayor Hallman’s sharing of his heart with some pastors on Monday morning confirmed my conviction on this future mission of HURT.  What we hear from catastrophic disaster in Haiti is not just about lack of help but that of infrastructure to handle the situations in organized and effective way.

So as we open H1N1 Vaccine Clinic this Saturday morning, we also want to see that this event would provide a place where community resources come together to get connected and increase their relationship to build a network for community well-being, which will definitely contribute to the emergency preparedness of the community.  Accordingly we encourage you to bring your resources (any material or practice related to well-being, preventive care, and emergency preparedness) to present at our church as well as bringing people who need to get flu shot or other well-being check.

Thank you so much for your attention on this long message with patience.  Please consider your participation and encouraging others to come.  Apologize for the short notice.  I just put January 30 as the date of vaccine clinic, thinking the timely administration of the shots after the storms and before the third wave of the flu.  However, we’ll continue this effort of community well-being day as the network gets widened and deepened.  If you want to bring your resources on Saturday, please contact me by Friday so we can be prepared your exhibit or presentation.  If you have any question or comment, feel free to contact me anytime!

Blessings,
