Revised Initiatives - in response to the unfortunate closing of three schools in Tempe this year, we have an incredible opportunity to engage the community to once again show why Tempe is one of the greatest cities in the world.
Cooperate and Communicate

The original goals of eliminating duplication, extending resources and expanding services are still the emphasis, we have simply drawn a larger circle to meet a more immediate need. We are simply asking those in the Faith Community, Service Agencies, Civic Groups and Corporations to Cooperate and Communicate. Once you have identified the school to adopt, run your back to school and toy drives through them and let us know. This way all the title one schools, which just happen to be in 85281 will be covered. Duplication will be eliminated, Resources will Extended and Services will be Expanded. Listed below are the schools that have been identified and the agencies that have taken the initiative to create the relationships.

Adopt a School - Selected Schools

School - Agency/Point Person

  • Thew – Stephen Sparks - TCAA / Chris Gonzales ,
  • Laird – Ben Saunders - Church on Mill
  • Holdeman – Tempe Salvation Army
  • Scales – First Things First (Courtney) – Boys & Girls Club
  • Children’s First Academy– Jayson Matthews - TCC

Adopt a Classroom

Stephen Sparks came up with an excellent idea to better serve our schools by adopting classrooms to provide teaches with supplies. To accomplish this new initiative we will need someone to work with the following:

  • Teacher Associations - contact the principal in each school to identify a PTA point person.
  • Neighborhood Association - to recruit neighborhoods engage in the schools within their proximity. Jayson Matthews said that he will contact Shawna.
  • Treasures for Teachers – Mike Cruza said he will contact them.
  • Faith Community - Ben Sanders will identify and recruit those in the faith community to get involved in schools in their proximity. He suggested volunteer drives for Tutoring and Reading Programs, as well as, sustaining supplies for classrooms.
  • District Foundation - Jayson will make contact and verify if the private foundation still raises money for teacher supplies.
