For Our City - Sahuarita
For Our City Sahuarita is excited to bring a week of service to our community. Service builds stronger communities and with the Town of Sahuarita's birthday in September it seemed like the best way to celebrate the birthday! Each day will be focused on different aspect of our community.
Sunday, September 18 - Family Day: Spend time with the people you love, turn off the TV's and the computers and talk, interact and play with your family. Take a few moments to discuss as a family what you would like to participate in during the rest of the week.
Monday, September 19 - Children's Day: Learn how you can make a difference in the local schools, commit to reading with your child every day or learn how you can become a mentor. Donate to shelters or organizations that serve children.
Tuesday, September 20 - Clothing Drive Day: Clean out those closets and drop off those summer clothes and the winter clothes the kids have outgrown and give them to those in need.
Wednesday, September 21 - Act of Kindness Day: Reflect on who helped make you who you are today and write them a letter of gratitude. Perform random acts of kindness to those you may see throughout the day. Purchase a Ben's Bell and give it to someone that serves in our community.
Thursday, September 22 - Fitness Day: Commit to eating healthier today, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk/bike to work or school, take a fitness class. Find more energy by spending it!
Friday, September 23 - Meet Your Neighbor Day: Walk across the street with a plate of cookies and meet that neighbor you don't know. Our grandparents knew what they were doing by getting to know those on their street; it makes the neighborhoods safer and gives everyone the feeling of belonging. Stronger neighborhoods make Sahuarita a stronger community. Sign up to be a part of the Neighborhood Watch.
Saturday, September 24 - Food Drive, Emergency Preparedness, Fiesta Sahuarita: Come celebrate with your town on her birthday! Bring a canned food item to donate to the food bank that serves so many residents of Sahuarita that are in need. Learn about being prepared in an emergency, the first 72 hours of an disaster are up to you to have the food, water and medications you need.
It will be a great week to be a Sahuarita Resident! I hope you will join in and feel a part of something incredible!

"Over 50 Community Leaders meet with the New Mayor of Sahuarita"
The For Our City Sahuarita Mayor's Breakfast saw community leaders of faith, business, nonprofit and municipal collaborate on the Week of Service events during Fiesta Sahuarita, September 18th thru the 24th.
After Kara Egbert thanked Mayor Skelton for her passion to initiate For Our City, the new Mayor, Duane Blumberg, shared his passion and direction,
"I want to see For Our City Sahuarita impact the lives of children..." Sanghoon Yoo, Director of HURT, shared the principle of For Our City creating an atmosphere of trust and the possibilites that can happen through collaboraton.
The majority of the time was spent in "Table Talk" where the leaders were asked to "Pick a Project" and then discuss some potiential ideas regarding community service.

One of the most creative ideas was for Neighborhood Day with a "Tail Gate Barbeque" at the High School Football game, celebrating Acts of Kindness that have been going throughout the week. Great things happen when leaders come together to boldly discuss, what can we do better together!
The Host Committee meets the first Tuesday in August to discuss next steps based upon the Table Talk Summaries and the tracking of volunteer efforts through the 100 Hours of Service Project with other For Our City programs throughout Arizona.
Freeport McMoRan was also congratulated for the Champion of Compassion 2011 award for their heart for sustainable programs for future generations.

Friday: Meet Your Neighbor Day
Saturday: Food Drive and Emergency Preparedness at Fiesta Sahuarita.
Volunteering is a great way to celebrate your community. And it’s even better to get into the action for the Town's 17th birthday and our State's 100th birthday.
Contact Council Member Kara Egbert for additional information on how your organization or family can get involved. Watch the “For Our City-Sahuarita” website for more details about this special week.
For Our City partners with “Fiesta Sahuarita”
For Our City: Sahuarita will launch “Days of Service” During Fiesta Sahuarita, September 24th. Fiesta Sahuarita is an Arizona Centennial Official Event to celebrate the state’s 100th birthday. This coincides with CARE INC’s/For Our City “100 Hours in 2011,” an initiative for individuals and organizations to track their volunteer hours, encouraging 100 hours of individual volunteer service.
There are now three For Our City Host Committees who are engaging in this opportunity to give a gift to Arizona. Watch for details regarding opportunities for volunteering, serving others and staying healthy.
For Our City - Sahuarita "Rolling up their sleeves"

For
Our City Sahuarita had a fantastic breakfast last Tuesday, with over 50
Community, Faith, Municipal and County Leaders discussing the next
steps to achieving their four objectives.
- Emergency Preparation
- Creating Community Communication Platforms
- Building Traditions
- Community Collaborative Service Events
Kara
Egbert facilitated the event for Mayor Skelton, greetng Mayor Garino
from Nogales and other dignitaries in attendance. The breakfast was
hosted at beautiful Rancho Sahuarita.
It was wonderful to sit out under the blue sunny sky of Southern Arizona, listening to the reports of what has been accomplished by the FOC Sahuarita host committee and partnering organizations.
"Now the work begins..." was the agreed take away of the event. We have completed our "Table Talk" now lets take our talk from the tables to the streets.
The host committee, made up of four task forces, will be meeting this week to further develop the plans and action steps for the summer events, culminating with a week of service projects during "Fiesta Sahuarita" in September.
BEST PRACTICE: Developing a task force for each objective, each made up with the four areas of leaders; Faith, Municipal, Nonprofit and Business.
“Building Sahuarita through relationships, service and preparation”

The Host Committee monitored the "Table Talk" and then gave reports from each table, representing all four areas of influence. Some of those ideas were to develop a "one stop shop; a clearing house of information to improve communication for those who have project for volunteers and those who have volunteers looking for projects. Another common idea was the need for more economic development and job creation. The consensus was that the leaders will continue to serve together for solutions, For Our City. |
For Our City-Sahuarita Host Committee will meet in December to review ideas and determine next steps. For more information, contact Kara Egbert, at kara@care-inc.org.
